In a suit filed Monday, a Pfizer subsidiary said it has entered into a settlement agreement with the state of Virginia that covers allegations that the company illegally promoted, marketed and sold prescription medicines to men over the counter.
The federal suit against Pfizer says the company was involved in the conduct, which took place in 2004. It said Pfizer's sexual performance enhancement drug Viagra had been promoted by a doctor and that the product was approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The suit also says the company marketed and sold Viagra without valid FDA approval, and that Pfizer was aware of a potential link between the drug and a number of sexual problems, including erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation.
